Cooler and Freezer Strip Doors

1-walk-in-cooler-strip-door

OVERVIEW

Preventing the loss of cold air from your cooler or freezer and reduces your energy bill while keeping your food or beverages cold. Using a walk-in cooler curtain or a walk-in freezer door curtain will eliminate this expensive air loss. The freezer door flaps hold the cold air in and prevent warm air from entering. The doors also meet the Energy and Security Act of 2007 which requires strip doors on all new walk-in coolers and freezers.

Mounting Options

  • Stud Mount - Mounts to the underside or face of the freezer or cooler and is ideal for wide openings. To replace worn-out strips simply remove lock nuts from the studs.
  • Tube Mount - For up to 6' wide openings and mounts to the face or underside of the freezer or cooler. To replace worn-out strips simply remove one end bracket and then you can slide off the strips and easily replace them.

USDA, NSF, CFIA Grade PVC

  • The PVC is extremely clear allowing for a clear line of sight.
  • NSF and USDA approved freezer door strips.
  • The plastic stays flexible even at low temperatures.
  • Freezer curtain strips maintain sanitation inside and out.

  • Supermarkets
  • Restaurants
  • Bakeries
  • Food processing plants

Update

The USDA passed the onus of compound compliance/approval to be under FDA provisions, specifically Title 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations). Since the USDA does not approve equipment or materials, we have material that meets CFR 21, which ensures that the compounds used are FDA certified raw materials. The Paylon strip curtains are Title 21 CFR compliant and carry a UFL-94 Fire Cert.

Quick Installation

1-plastic-freezer-curtains_opt

Both styles of mounting hardware are very quick to install. Only basic tools are required to attach the hardware to the freezer or cooler. The studded hardware hangs the strips on studs with lock nuts. The tube mount style only requires a few screws on the right side and the left side of the opening.

Save Energy

1-plastic-cooler-curtains_opt

Free flowing air in a controlled temperature zone is the number one cost for most food processing facilities and retail outlets. The freezer flap doors eliminate this unnecessary expensive and are one the of the quickest to install solutions. With an excellent ROI and ability to fit almost any opening these clear food grade strips are found in almost all facilities with coolers and freezers.

Low Temp PVC Strips

1-freezer-door-strips_opt

The unique composition of the low temp strips stays flexible to -20° F and the standard strips stay flexible to 0° F. The PVC material is nonporous making for an extremely slick surface. This is ideal as it helps prevent bacteria buildup. Standard grade PVC comes in 6” and 8” widths. Low-temperature PVC comes in 6” and 8“ widths.

Measuring

strip-door-how-to-measure

Step 1 – Width x Height

  • Measure the width and the height of the door opening or
area where you want to install the strips.

Step 2 – Choose Your Hardware

  • Decide on the type of mounting that best fits your application
  • Wall mount is preferred on doorways. This gets the hardware out
of the doorway and allows the strips to overlap the door jambs for
    maximum seal and air lock.
  • AKON will add 6" more in total height and add about 6" total in width
  • For in-jamb use header mount, simply order the exact size you need
    to span the opening.
  • Universal mount can also be used when you are not sure.
Strip Widths

PVC Strip Size Has 2 Aspects

  • Strip Width
  • and Thickness

How We Choose The Correct Strip Width

By using the simple chart shown below you can choose the appropriate
width of strip. For instance, if you have a very tall opening that you are
trying to cover and the strip width is too narrow it will curl at the bottom.
The taller the opening the wider the strip must be.

As an example if you have a 14’ high opening and it will be located indoors
then ideal strip as shown in the chart below would be a 12” wide strip.

strip-curtain-height-chart

strip-curtain-height-chart-2

How We Choose Strip Thickness

When choosing a strip thickness you should consider what will be traveling
through the strips.

  • .060"- Ideal for people only traffic such as walk-in coolers - Indoors
  • .080" - Ideal for heavy foot traffic and light industrial traffic - Indoors
  • .120" - Ideal for moderate industrial traffic - Indoors and Outdoors
  • .160" - Ideal for heavy industrial traffic for strong winds - Indoors and Outdoors

Things to Consider

  • Not all strip widths have all thicknesses available
  • For heavier traffic doors it is best to choose a Ribbed material over a Smooth material.
  • 12" and 16" strips with 100% overlap are not ideal for foot traffic due to the force required to walk through them
Strip Overlap

How We Choose The Correct Strip Overlap

We first consider the type and volume of traffic.

  • Personnel – Doors for people-only access should utilize small sized strips
with less overlap. Consider 6″ or 8″ material with 33% to 67% overlap. Use
4″ material only on very small openings because smaller strips have less wind
resistance and aren’t ideal for heavy forklift traffic.
  • Pallet Trucks – This indicates the door will get heavier traffic including
material pallets, typically accompanied by a person. In this scenario, 6″
material with 67% overlap, or 8″ with 25% or 50% overlap is the best option.
  • Forklift Traffic – Forklift traffic indicates strip doors will face more abuse.
Consequently, large PVC vinyl strip sizes are the best bet. Also consider the load
the forklift will carry as the strips will drag over the load. If the load is light, very
large strips may drag it off the forklift. Consider 12″ material with 50% to 100%
overlap or 16″ material if used windy areas outside.
