Are double swinging traffic doors fire-rated?
No. Double swinging traffic doors are not fire-rated, and this applies to every door we sell, from restaurant swinging doors to industrial swinging doors. There are three reasons:
- The door is not built from fire-resistant materials.
- The door has gaps around its perimeter so it can swing both ways.
- Wind or negative air pressure can push the door open.
If an opening needs a fire rating, pair the swinging door with an overhead roll-down fire door mounted above or next to the opening. The swinging door handles daily traffic, and the fire door closes the opening when needed. Some local codes also allow fire sprinkler heads on both sides of the opening, so check with your building inspector.
What window height makes a swinging traffic door ADA compliant?
The bottom of the window's viewing area should start no higher than 43 in. above the finished floor. That lets a person seated in a wheelchair see traffic coming from the other side.
Common ADA-compliant window sizes are 9 x 30 in., 12 x 30 in., 16 x 30 in. and 20 x 30 in. Windows are placed toward the swinging edge of the door panel, which lines them up with a person's line of sight as they walk up to the door. This applies to all of our doors, including retail swinging doors.
