What is ABS plastic?
ABS is a specially designed plastic hardened for strength, yet flexible enough not to crack with impacts. ABS material is also heat, moisture, and chemical resistance.
What is the difference between an Easy-Swing hinge and a V-cam hinge?
An Easy-Swing hinge is smaller, easier to push and closes slowly. A V-cam hinge is larger, pushes a little harder and closes faster.
- The Easy-Swing hinge mounts to both the header and the side frame, and the header carries most of the door's weight. It is made up of the top pin assembly, a cam plate, a cross pin, two rollers and covers. It suits smaller doors, such as restaurant and retail swinging doors. Because it is lighter, it is more likely to drift open from wind or negative air pressure.
- The V-cam hinge fastens to the side frame only, and the side frames carry the full weight of the door. It is made up of the hinge body, a roller assembly (pin and roller) and a hinge cover. It suits larger, heavier doors, such as the industrial swinging doors used at the back of big box stores and in factories with heavy carts and motorized traffic.
How do you choose between kick plates, impact plates, rub rails and teardrop bumpers?
Choose by the kind of traffic that hits the door and where it hits:
- Kick plates are 12 to 24 in. tall, in stainless steel or ABS plastic. They suit heavy foot traffic with an occasional cart.
- Impact plates are 24 to 42 in. tall, also in stainless steel or ABS plastic. They suit heavy foot traffic and medium pushcart traffic.
- Rub rails (bumper strips) run the full width of the door panel and range from 1 to 6 in. tall. Use them where a cart handle hits the same spot on the door again and again.
- Teardrop bumpers are available from 18 to 42 in. tall. Use them where motorized equipment or fast-moving carts can damage the door. A 3 in. profile works for most doors, and a 4 in. profile is better for larger doors or faster equipment.
